How to Write a Screenplay

7 Steps to Create a Marketable Script

by Screenwriter Simon J. Michael

STEP: 5 BEAT SHEET

To Create your Beatsheet (a list of scenes in your film) do this first:

* Make list of characters
* Write down what each character wants
* And then write why they want it

This will naturally evolve into the beat sheet. And this list will provide the backbone for your story. Within this initial list you will probably find your hook, climax, and ending.

Now if you take a moment to trace what happens to the main character of your movie you'll easily be able to create a timeline of his/her journey. Now write these down into 1-2 line descriptions. This will be the main storyline of your movie and will eventually be developed into full-fledged scenes. I want to state the importance of this - for without it your script will lose its focus and wander aimlessly = it will not become a script that someone will want to buy.

For a full-length movie you'll need approximately 100 scenes. The initial scenes you come up with will not be close to this number. The way you get to that number is by adding additional character storylines to your script and by making sure you have fully incorporated each main character's (any character seen on the screen the majority of the film) experience and reaction to the experience of what's going on in the story.
